iPad 2 Would be Released with GSM-CDMA Radios

The iPad 2 rumor has been discussed on previous post. Today we are going to know about the latest iPad 2 rumors about the successor of its product iPad, iPad 2 World Edition. The iPad 2 World Edition is rumored to be produced with Qualcomm's multimode CDMA-GSM chips networks inside. It seems Apple has big expectations on its next device - 2nd generation iPad. One of analyst from Wedge Partners, Brian Blair says,

"Apple is going to be ratcheting down production of the existing 3G iPad over the next two months in anticipation of ramping up a new World iPad that is powered by Qualcomm's multimode CDMA-GSM chips -- that'll run on both GSM and CDMA based networks around the world. Recent checks that suggest Apple is preparing to build approximately 48 million iPads in calendar 2011."

The 2nd generation iPad may be a world device with both GSM and CDMA radios integrated into the tablet device. According to analyst Brian Blair of Wedge Partners, Qualcomm's multimode CDMA-GSM chips will allow the iPad to be carried by both Verizon and AT&T in the U.S. This is good news for Verizon customers as the current iPad comes bundled with a MiFi hotspot for 3G mobile broadband access.

A dual-radio would liberate the iPad from the WiFi hotspot and let Apple produce one tablet device compatible with most major cellular networks. Though not explicitly mentioned, it would be nice if this GSM-CDMA chipset supported T-Mobile's flavor of 3G, not just AT&T's.

The 2nd generation iPad is expected to debut early next year and a report of out DigiTimes suggests component suppliers are preparing to ramp up production. According to the report, Ibiden, Tripod Technology, and TTM Technologies will supply the first round of PCBs for the 2nd generation iPad. The three companies have been certified by Apple are preparing a low volume of components for December 2010. The trio will ramp up production in early 2011 and will be joined by other four other suppliers in February 2011.

The iPad 2 would most likely be manufactured with precision unibody aluminium process like the MacBook Pros were made. I am not surprised to see Apple going for GSM-CDMA version because the iPad Wi-Fi version is already being sold with Verizon's Mi-Fi 2200 Mobile Hotspot device. Certainly, we anticipate the CDMA iPhone to be unveiled sometime next year as per the recent Apple-Verizon developments materialising. But looking at the wild popularity of iPad, Apple seems to be going for best of both worlds (networks) - GSM-CDMA. It would be Apple's call to choose on which products will be available in abundance - CDMA iPhone or iPad 2 World Edition.

According to earlier iPad 2 rumors, the 2nd generation iPad will make its debut in early 2011, one year after the first generation iPad was made available to consumers. In addition to GSM/CDMA connectivity, the iPad 2 rumors include both a front and rear-facing camera similar to the fourth generation iPod touch. The presence of cameras would further expand the devices capable of interacting using Apple's Facetime video chat tool which currently includes the iPhone 4, iPod touch, and Mac OS X computers with a Facetime camera.
